Chronicle

SummerSlam sets the clock

WWE scheduled SummerSlam for Saturday and Sunday, August 1–2, 2026, in Minneapolis. Complex set the Friday before, July 31, for two releases: a cover jointly featuring Ken Carson and WWE star Danhausen, and the WWE × Ken Carson SummerSlam collection of tees, hoodies, a bandana, and a varsity jacket.

The two were planned as one. Cover and collection were folded into a single launch plan; there was no separate plan for the cover. The cover story, email, social, video, and the product pages would all draw on the same product imagery.

Mid-July — the samples and the shoot

The cover shoot was set for mid-July in New York. At first, the product samples were not expected in time, and mockups and rendered product images were discussed as the fallback for the store.

In the end, the samples were shipped to New York so Ken Carson could wear the collection at the shoot, and the cover team planned to capture images of the artist in the product where possible, alongside the cover work. The session was meant to serve the store as well as the cover.

Before the rollout — the artist posts first

Ken Carson teased the collaboration on social before Complex was ready to announce it. The public attention arrived before the planned rollout was complete, and the Ken Carson artist page went live early as a coming-soon page where visitors could ask to be notified.

The page was public before its final assets were. Product and e-commerce imagery arrived in stages; the product-page images were due July 29, and the final product images were settled only on launch day. My part was on the store side: with others on the team, I brought product imagery onto the artist page and the product pages behind it as it arrived, so the store would be complete when the collection went on sale.

July 31 — one morning

At 9:00 a.m. PT on July 31, the collection went on sale on Complex’s web store, and the site’s banners changed over to the launch. The cover story followed within the half hour and carried a shop module for the collection. The Re-Rank episode, with Ken Carson re-ranking wrestling’s greatest stars ahead of SummerSlam, was published that morning; social ran across Complex’s accounts, the launch email was scheduled, and paid support was ready.

My part that morning was the store: the artist page, the product pages, and the banners, which I checked and watched as the launch went live. The cover, the video, and the campaign around them belonged to the wider launch team. What one plan had joined — cover, collection, video, and store — reached the public on one morning, the day before SummerSlam opened.
